1000 creative ideas... where to start?
How to select ideas and choose projects to work on
How do you prioritize when it comes to sewing projects?
Here’s a method I use that helps me keep creativity under control when it is “too much”.
1. Writing
Writing down on a piece of paper or notebook the ideas that are buzzing around in your head helps to clarify the idea better and, once on paper, some of them might not be so interesting anymore.
2. Drawing
Draw your idea as you can, it doesn't matter if the drawing is beautiful but try to highlight the parts that characterize it.
For example, for a sweater, how would you like the collar? The sleeve, raglan or set-in? Do you like puff sleeves? Consider the length and whether zippers or buttons are needed.
Also try to give a color to your project. If it's for you, which colors do you prefer or which ones suit you best?
Maybe the item you have in mind, you've seen worn by someone else... but would it look good on you exactly like this or does it need some variations?
By following this simple visualization exercise, the ideas already become concrete and self-select: those with more details and customizations will probably become your favorites!
3. Check list
Are there still too many ideas to choose from?
look at the seasonality: if you want to make a coat and winter is about to end, it is probably better to postpone this project until next fall. Dedicate yourself to something you can show off right away!
check your fabric stash (yes, I know you have one! Mine is a full closet! :D). If the fabric for that project is already there, what are you waiting for to start?
search online for the ideas you have drawn: see how the big brands interpret it. Sites like Farfetch or MyTheresa offer the collections of big fashion brands: let yourself be inspired by their attention to detail and fabrics. Do your research on Etsy too to see how other artisans have interpreted models similar to yours. Use Pinterest or Trello to gather ideas and inspiration.
4. Evaluate the pattern
Unless you are a pattern maker, you will probably need a pattern at this point. Finding the perfect pattern can take a while, but in your search for inspiration you may have already come across very similar patterns.
I usually look in the paper magazines I have at home for a pattern that is closest to my idea and then I adapt it according to my tastes.
Sometimes I make real collages of patterns (!). But then you can imagine the satisfaction of having an absolutely original and unique garment!
To sum up:
With this process you will be able to organize your most creative output and identify on which project to focus on first.
But not only that, you will come at the realization phase with all the details clear in your mind (and on your notebook!) and you will shorten
see your idea take shape!
See you in 2 Thursdays.
Have a great sewing weekend!
